Decatur Site

Alabama, United States

Located 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Huntsville, Alabama,  INEOS NOVA's Decatur plant site produces various grades of crystal and impact polystyrene resins.

The Decatur site began production of impact polystyrene in 1974 and was owned by Monsanto.  NOVA Chemicals purchased the facility in 1988 and immediately expanded the site’s manufacturing capacity.  In late 1990, crystal polystyrene production started up with the addition of a second line.  A second expansion in 1994 increased polystyrene production capacity from 110 to 375 million pounds per year, and in 1997 a low-residual polystyrene project was started.  Today, annual production capacity is 425 million pounds (193 kilotonnes).

Polystyrene Production

Feedstocks for the Decatur site include liquid styrene, rubber and mineral oil, which are transported respectively via barge, truck and rail. Polymer production is based on INEOS NOVA's proprietary product and process technology.  These polystyrene products are completed in pellet form and are transported to customers via rail and truck.

End Products

Crystal polystyrene resins are used in consumer products, such as foam cups, foam meat trays, and cassette, compact disc and DVD cases.  Impact polystyrene resins are also widely used for consumer goods and can be found in food service containers, consumer packaging, electronics packaging, office products and appliance parts.

Approximately 70 employees work at the Decatur site.
