Joliet SiteIllinois, United States
As INEOS NOVA’s headquarter the Joliet site, Illinois is located on the Des Plaines River approximately 55 miles (88 kilometers) southwest of Chicago. The 101-acre (42 hectares) site produces impact and crystal polystyrene and all grades of specialty polystyrene resins. The Joliet site has been operating since mid-1960 under the name of Rexene Polymers. The plant was purchased by Mobil Chemical in 1978 and began using BASF technology in the production facility in 1983. The site grew with a capacity expansion in 1988 and started a new production plant in 1991. In 1992 the site was sold to BASF Corporation. BASF constructed a new production plant in 1998 and debottlenecked existing lines while upgrading the waste water treatment facility in 2001 - increasing manufacturing capacity to about 800 million pounds (365 kilotonnes) annually. INEOS Americas LLC purchased the facility in 2005. Today, total annual production capacity is approximately 902 million pounds (409 kilotonnes). Polystyrene Production Liquid styrene is the primary feedstock for manufacturing both crystal and impact polystyrene, while raw materials such as solid polybutadiene rubber are combined for the manufacturing of impact and specialty polystyrene resins. Transfers via barge, rail and truck are used for the shipping of both the raw materials to Joliet and the finished products to our customers.
End Products Our customers receive the finished polymer products in pellet form. Crystal and impact polystyrene are used in food service containers, house wares, packaging applications, office products and small appliance parts. Specialty polystyrene resins are used in appliances for the refrigeration market. Approximately 150 employees work at the Joliet site. The site achieved OSHA Star certification originally in 1986, with the most recent recertification in 2006. The site is also ISO-9000 certified since 1996.
