Springfield Site, Indian Orchard

Massachusetts, United States

INEOS NOVA's Springfield site is located in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts, approximately 95 miles (150 kilometers) west of Boston.  The 24-acre (10 hectares) site produces impact and crystal polystyrene and select grades of Performance Products, including styrenic and acrylic co-polymers.

Springfield has been operating since 1946, with continuous production lines built in 1970 and again in 1978 – increasing manufacturing capacity to 140 million pounds (65 kilotonnes) annually.  NOVA Chemicals purchased the facility in 1987, and in 1991 redesigned one of the lines for the production of NAS performance acrylic co-polymers.  Today, total annual production capacity is more than 360 million pounds (164 kilotonnes).

Polystyrene Production

Liquid styrene is the primary feedstock for manufacturing both crystal and impact polystyrene, while raw materials such as methylmethacrylate (MMA) and solid rubber are combined for the manufacture of NAS. Transfers via rail and truck are used for the shipping of both the raw materials to Springfield and the finished products to our customers.

End Products

Our customers receive the finished polymer products in pellet form.  Crystal and impact polystyrene are used in food service containers, housewares, packaging applications, office products and small appliance parts.  NAS acrylic co-polymers are used in appliances, medical devices, toys, office accessories and point-of-purchase displays.

Approximately 70 employees work at the Springfield site.  The facility is ISO 9001:2000 registered.
