Food contact

The principal aim of regulations on food contact materials is the protection of consumer health. Many countries have requirements in the form of legislation or recommendations or Codes of Practice, in respect of materials in applications where contact with foodstuffs is intended. These requirements differ in several aspects and the EU continues to harmonise regulations by issuing Directives concerning food contact materials and articles, which are required to be implemented in the legislation of the member states. The EU's approach on food contact materials and articles takes the form of Council and Commission Resolutions and Directives. The latest such instrument is the so called “Super Regulation” on Food Contact Plastics, which is expected to be in force in the near future.
